Named after the Microbiology Society’s second President, the Microbiology Society’s Marjory Stephenson Prize is awarded each year to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the discipline of microbiology.

To inspire you to nominate an outstanding microbiologist for the 2018 award we’re looking back at one of our previous Marjory Stephenson Prize winners.

The 2015 prize was awarded to Robin Weiss, Emeritus Professor of Viral Oncology at University College London. Robin’s long and distinguished career has centred on the interface between infection and cancer, and he is most noted for discovering that CD4 is the binding receptor for HIV. His recent research has focused on antibody mediated vaccine research, managing an international HIV Vaccine Discovery Consortium (2006–2013).

Robin’s contribution to microbiology has been recognised through honorary appointments to UK governmental and international public bodies; these have included UK Department of Health Committees and chairing the governing body of the Institute of Animal Health of the Biotechnology & Biology Science Research Centre. He has also volunteered his expertise to a number of UK and international medical charitable foundations. Such exceptional contributions led Robin Weiss to be awarded the Marjory Stephenson Prize.

Members are invited to nominate an outstanding individual for the 2018 Marjory Stephenson Prize. For more information about the Prize and all our other prizes visit our website.
